THE TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT (AKA ENGINEERING ALUMNI ENDOWMENT)

PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The purpose of the Tennessee State University’s College of Engineering (CoE) Alumni Scholarship Endowment (aka ASE) is to maintain a perpetually funded and earning-generating endowment to provide academic scholarships to support study at the CoE. The CoE Alumni supports the Endowment for the sole purpose of supporting the CoE. 

SUMMARY OF SCHOLARSHIP SELECTION

a)     The Tennessee State University Engineering Alumni Association (TSUEAA) develops the criteria for the scholarships.

b)    The TSU Foundation will inform the TSU Scholarship Committee and CoE of the funds available for awarding each year

c)    The TSU Scholarship committee will collect, screen, and recommend applications with appropriate funding to the TSU CoE Scholarship Committee for approval.

d)    The TSU Scholarship Committee in the TSU Foundation allocates the funds to the students based on the TSU CoE Scholarship Committee approval.

TSU COE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE

a)    The CoE will establish a Scholarship Committee.

b)    Membership - At least one full member of the committee will be appointed by the TSUEAA.

i)      No combination of TSUEAA members shall directly or indirectly, control the committee. TSUEAA members may provide advice with respect to the selection of grant or award recipients solely as a member(s) of the committee.

ii)    Every member of the committee charged with the evaluation of candidates for scholarship shall adhere to the relevant policies of the Foundation as they may be adopted and amended from time to time, including without limitation a conflict of interest and confidentiality policy.

iii)   Every member of the committee shall be obligated to disclose any personal knowledge of and relationship with any potential scholarship recipient under consideration and to refrain from participation in the process in a circumstance where he or she would derive, directly or indirectly, a private benefit if any potential recipient or recipients are selected over others.  

iv)   No scholarship covered by this agreement may be awarded to any member of the Foundation's Board of Directors or TSUEAA officers, or any employee of the Foundation. 

v)     At least a thirty days notice shall be given of a meeting and all necessary materials shall be provide to the members at least 14 days before the meeting.      

 CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

c)    Responsibility- The TSUEAA will develop the criteria for scholarship selection. The TSUEAA may work with the CoE committee in developing these criteria.

d)    Requirements:

i)      The scholarships will be for U.S. citizens that are “U.S. Nationally Unrepresented Minorities (URM) in the field of engineering, technology, and computer science”.

ii)    Students awarded scholarships from the TSU CoE Alumni Endowment are required to volunteer a minimum of 5 hours per month in agreed upon special programs, such as:

(1)   Student mentoring activities, including pre-college

(2)   TSU Pre-Alumni activities

(3)   TSU CoE sponsored research activities

One of the requirements in order for the student to be renewed on a semester basis is proof of participation in above activities.  A statement from an advisor to participation in the activities is required.

e)    Priorities

i)      Scholarships are for current students. 

ii)    Scholarships are on a one year basis.  Students must reapply each year.

iii)    Priority may be given to those applicants that have participated in the TSU CoE and other university pre-college and pre-engineering readiness activities (i.e. HBCU-UP, ECI, SETI, M.I.T.E. , and etc.)

f)     Additional requirements:

The CoE Scholarship Committee reserves the right to impose additional, minor reasonable restrictions and/or requirements upon the awarding of scholarships.

ALLOCATING ENDOWMENT INCOME 

To ensure a relative even flow of funds to the CoE, annually total net earnings will be transferred to a separate account.  The CoE Scholarship Committee will make recommendations for funding scholarships not to exceed the amount in the separate earnings account.

RECOGNITION

The Donor(s) give the University and Foundation permission to publicly recognize their commitment in various publications and press releases.
