Leading Graduates Produced by the Tennessee State University College of Engineering

The TSU College of Engineering have produced many renowned graduates over its 60+ years of existence.  The TSU Engineering Alumni Association is proud to recognize the accomplishments, and relate the stories, of just a few our diverse and far-reaching fellow alumni, to show how our mutual Tennessee State University College of Engineering education helped lay the foundation for their professional successes.

Mr. Jesse E. Russell Jr. (TSU BSEE ’72)

JesseRussell.pngMr. Jesse E. Russell Jr. received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Tennessee State University in 1972.  As a top honor student in the School of Engineering, Mr. Russell became the first African American to be hired directly from a Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) by AT&T Bell Laboratories and subsequently became the first African American in the United States to be selected as the Eta Kappa Nu Outstanding Young Electrical Engineer of the Year in 1980. Mr. Russell continued his academic pursuits and obtained his Master of Electrical Engineering (MSEE) degree from Stanford University in Palo Alto, California in 1973.  Mr. Russell has earned and is associated with over 100 patents granted or in process. He provided thirty   years of experience in research and development at prominent institutions, and pioneered technologies such as the invention of the first digital cellular base station and fiber optic microcell utilizing high power linear amplifier technology and digital modulation techniques.  This laid the foundation for the digital cellular evolution, digital cellular standards, personal communications networks as well as the emergence of “Mobile Cloud Computing” within 4G/5G broadband wireless networks.

General Lloyd W. "Fig" Newton (TSU BS Aviation, ’66)

LloydNewton.pngGeneral Lloyd W. "Fig" Newton earned a B.S. degree in Aviation Education from Tennessee State University, where he was commissioned as a distinguished graduate through the Reserve Officer Training Corps Program in 1966. He is a retired United States Air Force four star general who served as Commander, Air Education and Training Command (COMAETC) from 1997 to 2000. Serving for more than three decades, Newton flew 269 combat missions in Vietnam, He was also the first African-American pilot in the U.S. Air Force Aerial Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds in November 1974.  He held several positions including narrator, slot pilot and right wingman. Newton was a command pilot with more than 4,000 flying hours in the T-37, T-38, F-4, F-15, F-16, C-12 and F-117 stealth fighter. served as a congressional liaison to the U.S. House of Representatives for the Air Force and led the Air Education and Training Command, which consisted of 13 bases, 43,000 active-duty personnel and 14,000 civilians. After leaving the Air Force, Newton worked at Pratt & Whitney as executive vice president of international military programs and business development until 2006. In 2018, Newton was honored as the recipient of the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy for his extraordinary achievements as a history-making military aviator and his continuing contributions to the advancement of aviation education and advocacy. Newton serves on the board of L3 Harris Technologies, Inc. and formerly served as Board Chair of the NBAA Board of Directors.

 Ms. Tifinie Adams (TSU BSAE ’04)

TifinieAdams.pngMs. Tifinie Adams graduated from Tennessee State University in 2004 with a B.S. degree in architectural engineering. After graduating from Tennessee State, Tifinie obtained her master’s degree in urban planning with a Concentration in Community Development from The University of Louisville. Tifinie spent two years working in Oldham County, Kentucky as a Planning Technician and is now working with the Nashville Metropolitan Planning Department as a Community Planner. Tifinie has led several community planning efforts in and around the Nashville Metropolitan area, helping community stakeholders plan for sustainable growth, development, and preservation.

Omar Al-Khatib (TSU BSCE 1999)

OmarAl-Khatib.pngDr. Omar Al-Khatib obtained his B.S. degree in civil engineering in 1999 from TSU, and M.S. in 2001 and a Ph.D. in 2006 from Tennessee Technological University. He is currently an adjunct professor at Tennessee State University and has his own engineering business

 

Ms. Annette Barnes (TSU BSAE ’00)

AnnetteBarnes.pngMs. Annette Barnes earned her B.S. degree in architectural engineering from Tennessee State University in 2000. She continued her education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute receiving a Master of Architecture degree in 2003. Ms Barnes is a Registered Architect, and a LEED AP. She is currently employed with Envision Architects in Albany, NY and is project architect for construction administration.  She was recently the recipient of the 2010 Excellence in Historic Preservation Award.

Ms. Rhonda D. Mundy (TSU BSCE ’86)

Ms. Rhonda D. Mundy graduated in 1986 from TSU with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. She retired July 2020 after 34 years with the City of Dayton, Oh., Bureau of Traffic Engineering. Her responsibilities included traffic operations, studies, and pavement marking design. She served the TSU Engineering Alumni Association as Corresponding Secretary, Vice President and President. Ms. Mundy was honored with the Chapter Spirit Award and Think, Work, Serve Award. Under her leadership, the TSUEAA received the 2020 TSUNAA Small Chapter of the Year Award. Ms. Mundy received a M.A. degree in Christian Ministries from United Theological Seminary and is Christian Education Director for Mt. Enon Baptist Church, Dayton, OH. 

Mr. Daniel Brock (TSU BS Aviation Flight ’07)

DanielBrock.pngMr. Daniel Brock is a 2007 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in Aviation Flight. Daniel went on to pursue his master’s degree from Purdue University in 2009 in human factors engineering.  Now, an employee with the Federal Aviation Administration, Daniel holds the office of human factors engineer & system safety analyst.

 

Ms. Corie Wilson (TSU BSEE ’12)

Ms. Corie Wilson is a Research Associate for the Systems Management and Production (SMAP) Center at the University of Alabama – Huntsville. She graduated from Tennessee State University December 15, 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. After graduating in 2012, Corie Wilson moved to Atlanta, GA to pursue a career at AT&T. While working at AT&T as a Network Engineer, Corie graduated on December 16, 2016 from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA with a Master of Science in Computer Science. Corie transitioned from AT&T after seven years and is now a Department of Defense contractor on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. Since relocating to Huntsville in August of 2019, Corie Wilson earned her Security + certification and a Government clearance. Corie spends her free time designing websites and building her company The Wilson Institute LLC which focuses on mentoring middle and high school ladies interested in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. Corie is also a member of Junior League Huntsville and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Boys and Girls Club in Huntsville, AL

Mr. Joseph Cleveland (TSU BSEE ’68)

JosephCleveland.pngMr. Joseph Cleveland earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Tennessee State University in 1968.  Mr. Cleveland is a retired chief information officer (CIO) for Lockheed Martin Corporation and president of Lockheed Martin Enterprise Information Systems. As CIO for the Lockheed Martin Corporation, Joseph was responsible for formulating the Corporation’s information technology (IT) vision and strategy, consolidating IT resources, implementing e-commerce initiatives, leveraging economies of scale, and supporting Lockheed Martin businesses. Mr. Cleveland passed away on August 16, 2022 in Orlando, FL.

Mr. Dave Collins (TSU BSAE ’08)

DaveCollins.pngMr. Dave Collins graduated from Tennessee State University in 2008 with a B.S. degree in Architectural Engineering. He earned his Master of Science in Structural Engineering from University of Texas at Austin in 2010. Mr. Collins earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tennessee Tech University in 2005. Mr. Collins is owner at OneRack, LLC of Franklin, TN.

Mr. Wimer Cooksey (TSU BSEE ’65)

WimerCooksey.pngMr. Wilmer “Wil” Cooksey earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Tennessee State University in 1965.  He earned an M.S. degree in industrial engineering from the University of Toledo in 1972 and pursued doctorate work in mechanical engineering at Michigan State University.  Mr. Cooksey was named plant manager of the world’s only Corvette plant in February of 1993.  He received the 1997 Black Engineer of the Year President's Award, has been honored as an Outstanding Graduate of Tennessee State University, and was named a "Black Achiever in Industry" by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.  He retired from GM in 2009 and received the Lifetime Service Award from the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities.  The award recognizes Cooksey’s “longtime dedication to education for African Americans.”  Before becoming a General Motors executive, Cooksey was a professor of industrial engineering at what is now Kettering University.  He continues to serve on the board of the Tennessee State University Foundation.

Ms. LaShawna Criswell (TSU BSAE ’03)

LaShawnaCriswell.pngMs. LaShawna Criswell is a 2003 graduate of Tennessee State University where she earned a B.S. degree in architectural engineering. Ms. Criswell is a field engineer at M.A. Mortenson Co (Minneapolis, MN) and is presently working toward her career goal of becoming a senior project or construction manager, managing multi-million-dollar projects for her company. Ms. Criswell died on July 25, 2013.

 

Ms. Erika L. Davis (TSU BSAE ’02)

Ms. Erika L. Davis graduated from Tennessee State University in 2002 with a B.S. degree of architectural engineering. Ms. Davis is a professional engineer in AL. She is a first Black Woman professional series civil engineer with US Forest Service at Land Between the Lakes NRA (2002), National Forests in Alabama (2006). She is currently the Recreation Heritage Engineering Lands and Minerals Staff Officer for the National Forests in Florida. She passed the PE exam on first attempt (2007) and is the first Black Woman to hold position of Engineer Program Manager within Southern Region of US Forest Service (2009). Erika is an experienced Empowerment Coach, founder and principal coach for Exhale Consulting, LLC.

Ms. Rayvelyn K. DeJarnett (TSU BSEE summa cum laude ’02)  

RayvelynDeJarnett.pngMs. Rayvelyn K. DeJarnett graduated Magna Cum Laude, with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering in May of 2002 from Tennessee State University and decided that she wanted to obtain an advanced technical degree.  With the support of the General Motors Foundation and The National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering & Science (GEM), Rayvelyn was selected as one of six students in the nation to be a 2003 General Motors GEM sponsored graduate fellow.  She chose to pursue her graduate studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy NY.  In December 2004, Rayvelyn completed the requirements for a M.S. degree in decision science & engineering systems.  Upon completion of her degree, she accepted an offer of employment from General Motors Corporation.  Since the start of her career, Rayvelyn has also been actively involved in the community as a US-FIRST Robotics Team Mentor, Campbell Academic Services ACT/SAT Preparation Instructor, and is a member of the Executive Board for the nonprofit organization ’The Next Four Years.’  Additionally, she was honored as the recipient of the Women of Color 2006 Rising Star in Technology.  Ms. DeJarnett is a design engineer for General Motors Corporation in Warren, MI.  Ms. DeJarnett began her career with General Motors as an intern engineer in May 2000, while a student at Tennessee State University.

Mr. Jerome D. Dempsey (TSU BSCE ’92)

Dempsey is a 1992 B.S. degree graduate of Tennessee State University in civil engineering.  Mr. Dempsey completed his M.S. degree in civil engineering (public works major) in 1996 at the University of Tennessee.  He is a registered engineer in Tennessee, certified environmental specialist, certified environmental inspector, and certified asbestos inspector.  Mr. Dempsey is president of Dempsey, Dilling and Associates, P.C. Engineering Consultants in Smyrna, TN.

Ms. Georgia Dumas-Whiting (TSU BSME ’82)

GeorgiaDumasWhiting.pngMs. Georgia Dumas-Whiting earned her B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from Tennessee State University in 1982 and M.B.A. (Finance Concentration) from Clark Atlanta University in 2001.  Presently, Ms. Whiting is manager of human resources information systems (HRIS) Operations Support, manager of strategic planning and analysis supporting Human Resource Division at FedEx Express in Memphis, TN.

 

Mr. Gerry Dupree (TSU BS Aeronautical Technology ’82)

Mr. Gerry Dupree graduated from TSU in 1982 with a B.S. degree in aeronautics. He continued his educational track at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University where he earned an MBA.  A former career U.S. Navy officer and aviator, Gerry retired from the reserves as a rank commander (CDR) in 2005.  He serves as an Airline Captain for FedEx Express, the leading cargo company in the world, where he is MD-11 and DC-10 Captain flying worldwide to over 200 countries and territories. Gerry is also the first and only African American test pilot at FedEx.  Gerry is also a twenty-three member of the “Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals (OBAP)” whose goal is to increase minority employment into all aspects of aviation, and he has served in multiple roles including northeast regional vice president for over four years.

Dr. Cedric Fairbanks (TSU BSCE ’99)

Cedric D. Fairbanks, Ph.D., P.E., is a native of Chattanooga, TN who moved to Durham, North Carolina in 2012.  While residing in Durham, NC he has been a Lead Engineer at Duke Energy for 6 years.  Dr. Fairbanks graduated in December 1999 from Tennessee State University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering.  After graduation, he worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a Department of Army Intern.  In 2002, Dr. Fairbanks attended graduate school at Clemson University, and subsequently received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Civil Engineering and holds a PE license in several states.  On January 2, 2020, Dr. Fairbanks was appointed to a five-year term to the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors by Governor Roy Cooper.  Cedric resides in Durham with his wife Jessica and their 4-year-old son, Thomas Cedric. He enjoys playing sports with his son and taking family trips around the beautiful state of North Carolina.

Dr. Kevin D. Fairbanks (TSU BSEE summa cum laude, ’05)

Kevin D. Fairbanks, Ph.D. who hails from Birmingham, AL, graduated summa cum laude from Tennessee State University in 2005 obtaining a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Fairbanks continued his education at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he obtained his M.S. and Doctoral degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2007 and 2010, respectively. During his career he has taught at Johns Hopkins University and the United States Naval Academy. Currently, Dr. Fairbanks is a senior cyber security researcher at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Mr. Paul Finley (TSU BS Computer Science magna cum laude, ’96)

Mr. Paul B. Finley is 1996 magna cum laude graduate with a B.S. degree in computer science from Tennessee State University. Mr. Finley obtained his M.S. degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999. Mr. Finley joined IBM in 1999 and now serves as the Cloud Automation and Deployment Architect for IBM Cognitive Systems with technical responsibility for the vitality of AIX as an Enterprise UNIX operating system within cloud service models.  Paul sets the technical direction for IBM Power Systems in the areas of multi-cloud solutions automation and industry standards around multi-cloud optimization while enabling customers to move mission-critical data on private and public clouds..

Dr. Charles K. Flack (TSU BSEE ’84)

Dr. Charles K. Flack is a 1984 graduate of TSU with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.  Dr. Flack earned a M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Syracuse University in 1987, and doctoral of business administration in information systems from Kennesaw State University in 2016.  After acquiring his B.S.E.E. from TSU, Dr. Flack began his professional career with IBM in 1984, and his last position was service manager and business executive in the project-based network service delivery practice in IBM Global Services in Atlanta, GA. After 37 service years at IBM, he is now employed as a associate partner in network consulting practice of Kyndryl.  Dr. Flack is also an adjunct professor at Augusta University (GA) in the School of Computer and Cyber Science.  Dr. Flack is the former president of the TSU Engineering Alumni Association, founder of the TSU CoE Alumni Scholarship Endowment, and is the TSUEAA’s chair of strategic planning and fundraising.

Ms. Bridget Hall (TSU BSAE ’05)

BridgetHall.pngMs. Bridget Hall graduated from Tennessee State University in 2005 with a B.S. degree in architectural engineering.  In 2009, she earned a Master of Architecture from the University of Cincinnati where she co-authored This is Uptown: Speculations on Mythological Urbanism with the Neioff Urban Studio in 2008.  In her professional career thus far, she aided in the development of many projects ranging from renovations of small-scale buildings to the design of multi-million-dollar buildings, complexes and master plans and has recently obtained certification as a LEED Green Associate. She is currently overseeing the construction of the first phase of The Banks in Cincinnati, Ohio with Moody-Nolan Inc which includes over 80,000 square feet of retail and 300 luxury apartments and is the largest urban development underway in the country. 

Mr. Don Hardin (TSU BSAE ’90)

DonHardin.pngMr. Don Hardin is a 1990 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S degree in architectural engineering.  Mr. Hardin is licensed as a general contractor in the state of Tennessee, and PMP certified.  In 2001, Mr. Hardin founded The Don Hardin Group and presently presides as president & chief executive officer.  The Don Hardin Group is a construction consulting and project management firm, which specializes in owner’s agent services, located in Nashville, TN.

Dr. S. Keith Hargrove (TSU BSME ’86)

Keith Hargrove, PhD, CMfgE, PE, MBA, serves as the Dean of the College of Engineering at Tennessee State University (TSU).  Dr. Hargrove received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from TSU, MS from the Missouri University of Science & Technology in Rolla, MO. as a GEM Fellow, and the Ph.D. from the University of Iowa as a CIC Fellow.  Dr. Hargrove was a Boeing Welliver Faculty Fellow in 2008, and a Harvard Fellow for 2005. He has worked for General Electric, Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories, NIST, Oak Ridge Laboratories, and General Motors, and is a Certified Manufacturing Engineer and member of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers. Dr. Hargrove is a Founding Board member of STEM Preparatory Academy Charter School in Nashville, TN, Vice-Chair of the Board for Smithson Craighead Academy, and serves on the advisory board of Stratford STEM Magnet High School. He is also the author of “Navigating Academia: A Guide for Women and Minority STEM Faculty” (Academic Press), and “In Search of Academic Leadership – A Primer for Faculty Development”.

Mr. Thomas F. Holloway, Jr. (TSU BSEE ‘66)

Holloway, Jr. graduated from TSU in 1966 with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.  Mr. Holloway earned a M.B.A. degree with an emphasis in engineering management from Florida Institute of Technology in 1982.  After acquiring his undergraduate degree, he immediately went to work for Harris Corporation in Melbourne, Florida in its electronics and space division as a design engineer. He was responsible for several crucial designs of components used on the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) as part of project Apollo, man's first moon lander in 1969.  After 34+ years of employment, he retired from Lockheed Martin Fire Control Systems in Orlando, Florida.

Mr. Michael (Mike) G. Holmes

Mr. Michael (Mike) G. Holmes earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Tennessee State University in 1973 and an M.S. degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University in 1974.  In addition, he completed an Executive Development Management Program at the Johnson School of Business, Cornell University.  Mr. Holmes is the Vice President of Lucent Worldwide Services (LWS) Global Services Technologies & Tools.

Mr. Frank Hornbuckle (TSU BSEE ’64)

FrankHornbuckle.pngMr. Frank Hornbuckle is a 1964 graduate of Tennessee State University School of Engineering with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering and a MS in Electrical Engineering from Rutgers University. Mr. Hornbuckle is the Chief Operating Officer for Swales Aerospace with over 30 years’ experience in the government and commercial spacecraft business.  Prior to joining Swales, Mr. Hornbuckle was employed by CTA Space Systems in Beltsville, Fairchild Space Company in Germantown, Md., and at RCA ASTRO in East Windsor, N.J.  Frank had an extensive and successful career in Engineering and Aerospace, working at RCA Astro Electronics in East Windsor, NJ, Fairchild Space in Germantown, MD, CTA Spacecraft in Beltsville, MD and then retiring from Swales Aerospace in Greenbelt, MD as Chief Operating Officer. While working with RCA, he designed the circuitry for the camera that was used on the Apollo Moon Shot mission in July of 1969 that was manned by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. While at Swales Aerospace, he oversaw the Themis space project of 2007. This was a project that put 5 Satellites into space and orbit at one time, a feat that had never been accomplished before. Frank Hornbuckle died on November 9, 2020

Ms. Debbi Howard (TSU BSCE ’94)

Ms. Debbi Howard earned a B.S. degree in civil engineering from Tennessee State University in 1994.  The former Dwight Eisenhower Scholar and Tennessee Road Builders Scholar, in 1998 earned an M.S. degree in civil engineering (Engineering Management specialty) from University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Presently, Ms. Howard with 26 years of experience with the Tennessee Department of Transportation, moved up in rank from a Roadway Specialist, Transportation Specialist, Structural Engineer to her current position as a Transportation Manager. In these roles she served as the Highway Performance Monitoring System Coordinator as well as the HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) State Coordinator for the Department.

Mr. Clinton S. Jackson, Jr. (TSU BSME ’69)

ClintonJackson.pngA former project engineering manager (EPC Projects) for Raytheon Engineers & Constructors / Rust Engineers & Constructors Division, Mr. Jackson has been semi-retired since 1997 and currently works temporary contract assignments as a SR Piping Engineer, Sr. Piping Designer, or as a Project Manager.

Dr. Hinton Jones (TSU BSAE ’67)

Dr. Hinton Jones is a 1967 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in architectural engineering.  Dr. Jones completed a Master of Architecture at Howard University is 1970 and a doctorate in architecture at The University of Michigan in 1987.  Dr. Jones is a licensed and registered architect in Tennessee, and is LEEDs certified.  He is the interim department head and associate professor in the Department of Architectural Engineering and Facilities Engineering at TSU. Dr. Hinton died on August 19, 2013.

Ms. Jean Hopper King (TSU BSAE ’83)

JeanHopperKing.pngMs. Jean Hopper King received her Bachelor of Science in architectural engineering from Tennessee State University (TSU) in 1983.  She has worked in the architecture field as well as the construction side of the industry for many years.  She served under US Commerce’s Department as a construction consultant. The past sixteen years Jean has been self employed as a residential and commercial real estate licensed appraiser. Before receiving an engineering degree from TSU, Jean also received a Bachelor of Science degree in clothing & textile in 1974 and a teacher’s certification in 1975 from Tennessee State University.

Mr. Tyrone Lewis (TSU BSAE ’82)

TyroneLewis.pngMr. Tyrone Lewis is a 1982 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in architectural engineering.  Mr. Lewis is a certified architect in Tennessee.  Mr. Lewis is a former interior space planner with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), based in Memphis, TN, with responsibility for all IRS sites across the US.   Mr. Lewis is also employed in the architectural firm Architectural, Inc. based in Memphis, TN

 

Mr. Harrison Lockhart (TSU BSAE ’99)

HarrisonLockhart.pngMr. Harrison Lockhart graduated from Tennessee State University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in architectural engineering. Mr. Lockhart passed the Professional Engineer exam and obtained his Professional License in the State of Tennessee in June 2010. Currently, he is working as an engineer in Government Agency in the Bahamas and has owned business in the Bahamas and applied for Business License in Tennessee

 

Mr. Roosevelt Luster, III (TSU BSEE ’97)

Mr. Roosevelt Luster, III earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Tennessee State University in 1997 and a M.B.A. in finance from University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2003.  Mr. Luster's first job after graduation was a Distribution Engineer with Alabama Power a Southern Company.  Now, Mr. Luster is a Large Projects O&M Project Manager with Tesla.  Roosevelt's career accomplishment is taking over a $25 Million Underground Gold Mining Project from contractor that was dismissed from project due to safety and quality concerns.  Mr. Luster was able to analyze how previous contractor failed and institute several process improvements to turn a significant profit for employer.

Ms. Rhonda Y. Lyons (TSU BS Aeronautics)

RhondaLyons.pngMs. Rhonda Y. Lyons served as pilot and licensed A & P mechanic in the military prior to obtaining her B.S. degree from Tennessee State University with a focus in aeronautics. Her master’s studies with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University focused on Safety Systems & Human Factors.  Currently, Lyons is an engineering Ph.D. candidate at Florida Institute of Technology, focusing on Human Centered Design in Safety Critical Systems.  In 2010, The Black Engineer of the Year organization recognized Lyons as a Minority in Research Science Trailblazer.  Lyons now holds the position of experimental flight test operations manager, within the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group, responsible for the management of multi-disciplined cross functional teams associated with conducting worldwide experimental testing, instrumentation, modification & certification on all Boeing commercial model aircraft throughout the product lifecycle.

Mr. Jerel McCants (TSU BSAE ’94)

JerelMcCants.pngMr. Jerel McCants is a 1996 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in architectural engineering. He earned a Master of Architecture from University of South Florida, Tampa in 2001. Jerel McCants Architecture, Inc. was established in 2009.  Jerel has been published in various magazines and online journals. His most recent contribution was on the digital magazine called The Manual. Jerel has served on AIA Tampa Bay’s Board and in 2010 received the President’s Award and will be the incoming President in 2021. He is active in community politics serving as the 11th Congressional District Delegate to the DNC in 2008. His firm won the South Tampa Chamber of Commerce 2015 Small Business of the Year Award and was accepted into the SBA 8(a) Certification Business Development Program.

Ms. R. Renée McCleary (TSU BS Computer Science, ’88)

Renée McCleary earned her M.S. degree in computer science from Howard University in 1990.  Ms. McCleary has over 22 years experience in the communications industry and is currently a project manager with the AMERICAS Network Services Project & Demand Management Group of Hewlett Packard’s Enterprise Services Information Technologies Organization. She is currently supporting the Alcatel-Lucent Account.  

Mr. Fredrick L. McKissack (TSU BSAE ’64)

McKissack is a 1964 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in civil engineering.  Mr. McKissack worked first as a civil engineer for the city of St. Louis and the U.S. Army.and later owned his own general contracting company in St. Louis.  He devoted his time to the family business, All-Writing Services.  Since the 1980's, he and his wife Patricia (also a TSU Graduate, ’64) have written over a hundred books together.  Most of their titles are biographies and African American histories. Frederick is the researcher of the duo and leaves the writing to his wife.  They work together to refine the manuscript. His collaboration with Patricia McKissack has led to the publication of several award-winning titles, including their 2003 Coretta Scott King Honor Book; Days of Jubilee; Sojourner Truth: Ain’t I A Woman; Jesse Jackson: a Biography; and Frederick Douglas: The Black Lion are just a few of their titles. Mr. McKissack died on April 28, 2013.

Mr. Andre’ Peek (TSU BSEE ’79)

andrepeek.jpgMr. Andre’ Peek is a 1979 graduate with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.  Mr. Peek is a director in the Media & Entertainment Industry division in IBM Global Technology Services.  Mr. Peeks leads U.S. sales and business development for IT services within IBM's media industry vertical.  Andre’ is in his 40th year with IBM.

 

Ms. Kenyona Pierre (TSU BSAE ’07)

KenyonaPierre.pngMs. Kenyona Pierre is a 2007 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in architectural engineering.  Ms Kenyona is currently pursuing a Master of Science in degree in civil engineering (transportation engineering) at the University of Alabama – Tuscaloosa.

 

Mr. William A. Radford (TSU BSAE ’04)

WilliamRadford.pngMr. William A. Radford earned a B.S. degree in Architectural Engineering from Tennessee State University in 2004. While at TSU, he became an Officer Candidate of the US NAVY Civil Engineering Corps being honorably discharged with the national defense service medal after approximately 4 years of service. Mr. Radfod went on to operate an independent design-build consulting service for single and multi-family home developers. Currently, he serves as Architectural Design Manager for Lend Lease Americas, providing management for the first-ever privatization of hotels on U.S. Army posts, Privatized Army Lodging – a $450 million dollar transaction, noted as Project Finance's 2009 "North American Real Estate Deal of the Year".

Mr. Breun Reed (TSU BS Computer Science ’04)

BreunReed.pngMr. Breun Reed is a 2003 graduate of Tennessee State University where he earned his B.S. degree in computer science. After college, Breun joined IBM, where he has worked for 7 years within IBM Rational. A software quality professional, Breun Reed has learned testing from the ground up. His experiences in Rational included supporting functional and system level testing for IBM Rational ClearCase, IBM Rational ClearCase Multisite, and 3rd-party integration testing during the McKinley SR4, SR5, Baltic 7.0, and Baltic 7.0.1 releases. Currently a software quality engineer at IBM Rational Software, he works on the Rational System Verification Test Desktop Integrations team as a focal point (lead) on the Software Development Governance GreenThread effort. He continues to develop tests scenarios and serves as a source of information and advice for those new to Rational solutions.

Mrs. Isabelle Revell-Ford (TSU BSCE ’82 and TSU ME Environmental Engineering)

Mrs. Isabelle Revell Ford is a 1982 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. She also earned a M.E. degree in Environmental Engineering in 2005 from TSU.   Mrs. Ford early career started with Ga Department of Transportation as a Transportation Engineer. Mrs. Ford retired from the City of Mt Juliet, TN in 2014 where she served as Assistant to the Public Works Director/ City Engineer. Mrs. Ford is the President of Square O Consulting, LLC which provides outreach and technical assistance to minority landowners build wealth. One of my accomplishments was getting “CultureBets” approved by the state of Oklahoma which was a supplemental use for grades K-3rd.

Dr. Decatur Rogers (TSU BSME ’65)

DecaturRogers.pngDr. Decatur Rogers began his academic career at Tennessee State University, after receiving the Ph.D. in mechanical engineering (Thermal Systems Concentration) from Vanderbilt University in 1975, as an assistant professor and Director of University Planning. He earned his B.S. degree from Tennessee State University in mechanical engineering and two master’s degrees from Vanderbilt University in mechanical engineering and engineering management.  Dr. Rogers was dean of the TSU College of Engineering from July 1, 1988 to December 31, 2007. He was special advisor to the president at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL. from 2007 to 2018.

Mr. Reginald Shariff (TSU BS Computer Science ’00)

Mr. Reginald Shareef is a 2000 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in Computer Science. He is a 20-year Technologist, Philanthropist, and Business Professional focused on utilizing his breadth of knowledge to create win-win solutions for people who cross his path and technology corporations, demonstrating his learning agility, technical and communication skills. Reggie is a Technology Executive for Microsoft, Real Estate Broker for Kumbaya International Realty Group, and Founder of the "It’s C.O.O.L. to be S.M.A.R.T."  Movement. Reggie is from Pittsburgh, PA, now living in Atlanta, GA and enjoy learning, reading, music, traveling and real estate.

Dr. Marcus W. Shute, PE (TSU BSME magna cum laude ’84)

Dr. Marcus W. Shute, PE, earned a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering at TSU in 1984, the first to graduate with a 4.0 GPA. He earned an S.M. in Materials Science at M.I.T., P.E. in Mechanical Engineering from the State of Georgia, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech. In 1986, he joined AT&T Bell Labs as a Member of Technical Staff. Dr. Shute was VP of Research and Sponsored Programs and Professor of Electrical Engineering at TSU and VP of Research and Sponsored Programs and Professor of Physics/Dual Degree Engineering at Clark Atlanta. He founded Shute Enterprises and serves as COO of Pruuvn, Inc. Awards include US Black Engineer of the Year, Golden Torch Award, NTA Technical Achiever of the Year and Distinguished HBCU Alumni Award. He has numerous publications, presentations, and patents. Dr. Shute was a finalist in the NASA Mission Specialist Astronaut Program and is a member of the USA Masters Track and Field team as a multiple time world champion

Ms. Astrid Spivey (TSU BSEE ’04)

AstridSpivey.pngMs. Astrid Spivey Hernandez is a 2004 graduate of Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.  Ms Spivey is distribution engineer at Southern Company (Atlanta, GA), where she works daily with commercial and residential developers.  She is responsible for designing the most cost-efficient power system for her customers.

 

Mr. Daryl A. Starks (TSU BSAE ’08)

DarylStarks.pngMr. Starks is presently employed as a project engineer for MBA Structural Engineers, Inc. in Birmingham AL. Mr. Starks is also involved with the ACE Mentorship Program of Birmingham, serving as mentor coordinator, and is a professional member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the National Society of Black Engineers-Alumni Extension (NSBE-AE).

Mr. Samuel Truesdale (TSU BSME ’01)

Mr. Samuel Truesdale is a Mechanical Engineering graduate of both Tennessee State University B.S. and Purdue University M.S. He is currently the Product Experience Quality Engineer for Facebook Reality Labs. Sam previously served on the American Society for Engineering Education Diversity Council, the College and Industry Partnership program chair, Conference for Industry and Education Collaboration, the National Collaborative Task Force on Engineering Graduate Education Reform, and the Corporate Members Council Board of Directors. Sam is a former advisor to the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) National Steering Committee, the Project Lead the Way National Board, the Purdue University President’s Executive Roundtable, the Purdue University Engineering Education Council and both Tennessee State University and Alabama A&M University Business and Industry Clusters. He has been honored as the 2005 Black Engineer of The Year Awards Modern Day Technology Leader, Ebony Magazine “Top 30 Under 30: Young Leaders for the Year 2006”, 2014 Brilliant is the New Black and Tennessee State University Alumni – Notable Man of 2015.

Mr. Tony L. Wells (TSU BS Computer Science ’93)

Wells graduated in 1993 from Tennessee State University with a B.S. degree in Computer Science.  Mr. Wells worked as a summer intern all four summers while at TSU at Bellcore (Bell Communications Research) in Piscataway, NJ. In 1993 Mr. Wells was selected by The National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering & Science (GEM) to attend graduate school at Howard University.  In 1995 Mr. Wells received his M.S. in Computer Science from Howard University.  Mr. Wells worked as a Systems Engineer since 1995 with Raytheon and various federal contractors.  Mr. Wells is presently employed by Northrop Grumman, Information Systems Sector working as a project manager in Washington, D.C.  and holds a Top-Secret DoD clearance.

Mr. James Williams, PE (TSU BSCE ’89 and ME Civil ’98)

Mr. James Williams, P.E., obtained his B.S. degree in civil engineering in 1989 and his M.E. in civil engineering in 1998 from Tennessee State University.  Mr. Williams is the Owner/Principal Engineer of POA&M Structural Engineering, PLC, a consulting firm out of Yorktown, VA.  James' first job after graduation was as a structural engineer with Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) performing shock design analysis of foundations for the Seawolf submarine program.  He would later start a part-time consulting business in 2001 after obtaining his professional engineering license. In 2009, he transitioned to POA&M Structural Engineering full-time after serving as the Engineering Manager of the CVN21 Propulsion Plant Shock Management Group for over six years. He believes his greatest success is being viewed as an engineering professional of unquestionable integrity and an invaluable asset using the tools provided by his university.

Dr. Shimere Williams (TSU BSCE ’02)

ShimereWilliams.pngDr. Shimere Williams Sherwood received a B.S. degree in civil/environmental engineering from TSU in 2002 as well as a Ph.D. in neuro pharmacology from Meharry Medical College. Her doctoral research focused on the role of the dopaminergic-signaling pathway underlying the maintenance phase of long-term potentiation (long-term memory). Shimere serves on the professional staff for the Energy and Environment Subcommittee, where she works on ocean, weather, environmental, energy, and technology issues. Prior to joining the Committee, her path to a career in policy began with a dynamic experience at the National Academy of Sciences. She completed a graduate science and technology policy fellowship with the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research in the Division on Earth and Life Studies.  She then succeeded with the Board on Children, Youth and Families in the Institute of Medicine and Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education.

Ms. Marsha Morgan (TSU BSME ’01)

Ms. Marsha Morgan is a native of Birmingham, Alabama and has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tennessee State University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Professionally, she has a diverse background in the electric utilities industry, which includes Engineering, Project Management, and Compliance. Marsha is involved in several professional and community service organizations including the Community investment Network, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc, and National Society of Black Engineers. She is also a certified Project Management Professional.

Mr. Terrence Southern (TSU BSCS ’03)

Mr. Terrence Southern received his BS in Computer Science from TSU in 2003, as was hired to be Lead Robotics Engineer at General Motors. He is a Robotics & Artificial Intelligence Specialist, Entrepreneur, Inventor, Philanthropist and Public Speaker. He is currently the Director of Automation for American Trailer World Corp (ATW), the North American leader in trailer manufacturing. As an influencer of innovation and a recognized leader in Robotics & Artificial Intelligence, Mr. Southern continues to implement strategies to deploy robotic solutions and machine learning technology across the globe.   Over the course of his career, which spans 18 years, he has installed more than 2000 robots on projects the across the world for multiple Fortune 100 companies. He has also founded the non-profit Illuminate STEM which provides learning opportunities that ENCOURAGE, EMPOWER and EQUIP students to innovate the technical future of tomorrow.

Mr. Nevin R. Harton (TSU BSEE ’83)

Mr. Nevin R. Harton received a BS Degree in Electrical Engineering from TSU in 1983.  After graduation, Nevin was hired by AT&T Bell Laboratories as a Member of Technical Staff.  He obtained a MS Degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University in 1984 via Bell Labs’ One Year on Campus program.  After graduation, he worked as a hardware, firmware, and software engineer in the 5ESS Switch Digital Service Circuit (DSC) Development Group where he developed digital filters to detect telephone digits and call progress tones.  He also developed a maintenance program to routinely exercise DSC circuit packs to detect and report hardware and software errors.  During his 25-year Bell Labs tenure, his teams twice won the coveted corporate-wide AT&T Software Excellence Award.  Nevin serves as Senior Director of IT at Paradies Lagardère Travel Retail.

Mr. Eric Wheeler (TSU BSAE ’02)

Mr. Eric Wheeler is a licensed Structural Engineer and Senior Associate at Thornton Tomasetti. His portfolio includes large scale building renovation/renewal projects across Chicago, such as the redevelopment of Navy Pier and award-winning projects at the University of Chicago. Eric's recent achievement is the new 4-story retail podium at the base of Willis (Sears) Tower. Eric graduated from TSU in 2002 with a BS in Architectural Engineering. He earned a MS in Civil Engineering (Structures) from Purdue University in 2007. Prior to attending Purdue, Eric served as a field engineer in Milwaukee.

 

Ms. Tiffanie Kendrick (TSU BSAE ’02)

Ms. Tiffanie Kendrick earned her Bachelor of Science in Architectural Engineering at Tennessee State University in 2002 and her Master of Business Administration (MBA) at Strayer University in 2006.  Tiffanie started her career working for Turner Construction, one of America’s largest Construction companies. During her tenure with the company, she completed over $1Billion USD of new construction nationally and internationally for government and private clients. Currently, Tiffanie consults around the world with numerous governments and other Fortune 500 Companies

Mr. Isaac Addae (TSU BSEE ’04, MSSE '06)

Mr. Isaac Addae, as the child of Ghanaian immigrants, is committed to strengthening communities of color globally. He relies on business expertise, experience, and a yearning for change to fuel his efforts. Isaac is an Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Tennessee State University where teaches strategy, entrepreneurship, and leadership. He also serves as the Chief Development Officer of Pivot Technology School where he fosters relationships to further the organization's mission of training minorities for technology careers. Isaac received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 2004, a M.S. in Systems Engineering at TSU in 2006, and a PhD in Management at Morgan State University in 2021.

Mr. Preston Wilson (TSU BSCE ’02)

Mr. Preston Wilson is the training manager for FEMA's National Dam Safety Program.  Preston has a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Tennessee State University.  From 2002 - 2006, he worked for the Federal Highway Administration as a Highway engineer in the Florida Division and Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division.  Preston joined FEMA's Public Assistance program as a Civil Engineer where he assisted communities to recovery from disasters.  Mr. Wilson's current duties include: Developing and delivering dam safety training and technical assistance for dam safety professionals.  Mr. Wilson uses his knowledge of Civil Engineering to interpret policies and regulations to reduce dam risks to the nation.
